Watching My Girls Light Up the Stage Brings Me Joy!

March 27, 2010

Gosh, is there anything more fun than a middle school musical?!?

Both of my girls are in this years’ Thoroughly Modern Millie, an adorable show set in 1920’s New York.  Fresh off the bus from Kansas, Millie arrives in the big city with plans to land a job, marry her boss and become what Vanity Fair calls, “a modern woman.”  Of course her plans go more-than-slightly-askew, but all’s well that ends well:  Millie gets a job, a marriage proposal and helps catch the bad guy (or in this case, bad girl).  Cute, cute and cute.

I love that the girls did this play together.  I love that they’re involved with the theater.  I have some of the greatest memories from being on stage both in middle school and high school.  There’s nothing like the excitement as things finally come together just before opening night.  All those hours of rehearsal come together and as the curtain rises for opening night, it’s almost impossible to contain the joy.

My favorite part is always the big crush of people after the show;  parents and loved ones searching for their actors, flowers in hand.  The hugs, the congratulations, the sheer joy;  in that moment every single actor is the star.

I love watching these kids I’ve known for years basking in their moment.

So to my girls, Emily and Maddie, congratulations on a fabulous show.  You two lit up the stage.

And to the whole cast:

You made some magic up there on that stage.
