Oh, Ed. You’re such a joy!

April 7, 2010

Ed Debevic’s is a Chicago landmark.  It’s the only place in town where people pay to get bad service.  In fact, the more you can get your server to sling insults at you, the better.  Sarcasm is king, and the more they like you, the better the abuse.

Seriously.

Now, as someone who was raised to be polite and kind (especially in public), you’d think this place would be a turn-off.  But you’d be wrong.  Because nothing brings me more joy than good, clean teasing, and the wait staff at Ed’s are, hands-down, the best at cutting straight to the chase and telling it like it is.  They never cross over the line into being  “mean,” though, and somehow, being called a “spoiled brat” by Vegas-the-server sort of feels like a compliment.

Go figure.

It’s also the only place my husband would willingly wear a paper hat:

And can we talk about the food for a minute?  Holy cow!  The blue-moon burger is just a little piece of heaven.

The kiddos love the handmade shakes and the fries are yummy.

And if all of that hasn’t convinced you, Ed’s also provides first-rate entertainment:

That’s right: they serve your food, insult your outfit and dance on the counters.

Good fun, good fun.

Still not enough to convince you?  How about balloon hats?  Everyone loves a good balloon hat:

So, you’re thinking Ed’s sounds good, but you’re not quite sure you’re up for insults:

I’m not sure if anyone has ever requested the courteous service, though.

That would take all the fun out of it.

And at Ed’s, it’s all about the fun.

Hope you find some of your own fun today!
XO,

Vicki

PS  I know I’m going to hear about it if I don’t mention the fact that I took a digger in front of the hostess stand.  That’s right:  I fell right there in front of everyone.  You’d think that would give them plenty to tease me about, but what I ended up getting instead was this:

A world’s smallest hot-fudge sundae.  Awww…it was almost worth the humiliation!  : )
