Tom’s Marilyn Monroe Egg Cracked Me Up!

April 8, 2010

There’s something you need to understand about my brother, Tom:  he’s always been an overachiever.  You know the type:  “A” student, made his bed without being told, etc., etc.  When I was growing up, I thought there was nothing in the whole world I was better at than Tom.  Oh, sure, I earned my fair share of “A”s, I married a great guy and I seem to be doing an above average job raising three great kids.  But still, there’s always that mild underlying, unspoken feeling of competition with Tom that I can’t seem to shake.  Most days I have it completely under control.  And then something happens and BAM!  That competitive spirit just rears it’s ugly head. Turns out egg decorating brings out the competitive spirit in all of us.

This year, Tom asked me to bring supplies for Easter egg decorating.   Tommy and Christy joined the kiddos and I early Sunday morning for egg decorating extravaganza.  As I mentioned in a previous blog, I was determined to give a few of Martha’s egg designs a go this year.  I gathered patterns, felt, tissue paper, dyes, vinegar, scissors, glue, pompoms and Sharpies.  We were going to make some Easter Egg magic!

And we did:

Pretty cute, huh?

Emily, Maddie, Jack, Tommy, Christy and I colored and glued and cut and laughed and decorated together for hours.  We made a whole army of cute egg critters:

Towards the end, we got a bit slap-happy; Christy drew in some festive eyebrows which led Tommy to believe that a blue bunny would be a good idea and then Maddie insisted on making a green one, too.  It was all good fun.

And then Tom picked up an egg.

The next thing I know he’s abandoning the Sharpie eyes and adding pompom eyes.  Then came the mole, which was quickly followed by a mad search for appropriate hair.  My brother spent a tremendous amount of time gluing individual strands of hair on his egg.

“It’s Marilyn,” he explained, as if I should have been able to guess on my own.

Soon “Marilyn” was getting a haircut and style, too (she needed bangs, of course!):

I had to admit, there was definitely a slight resemblance:

Only Tom could manage to beat me at my own egg decorating game!  : )

When we were done decorating, all the eggs headed outside for the totally staged, one-for-the-blog photo shoot:

Marilyn was exhausted after her hectic morning of having to look so good.  As soon as the shoot was over, she was out of there.

Later we found her hanging out at the bar:

Bravo, Tom!  Your Marilyn egg totally cracked me up!  Loved it!

I wonder what Martha would think, though?

Didn’t the eggs look cute on the gorgeous Easter table?

Hope your day is filled with happy!

XO,

Vicki
