John Salata Memorial 5K Run/Walk

September 12, 2010

“There are some who bring a light so great to the world
that even after they have gone, the light remains.”

Leigh Standley

I didn’t know John Salata very well, but I definitely knew how much he meant to my sister-in-law and her family.  To the Rivera’s, John Salata was a best friend, an Uncle, and an all-around fantastic man.  When Suzanne called to tell us about John Salata’s death, I knew the Riveras had to be devastated;  the grief that comes from losing someone that beloved knows no limits.   And while time has marched on, I know Suzanne and her family still mourn the loss of their dear friend.

Today, however, was a day of celebration.

Today, a couple hundred people gathered to run and walk and celebrate what John Salata was all about:  family, friends, living a healthy lifestyle, and knowing when it was time to have a good time.

And today, a good time was definitely had by all.

Today was absolutely gorgeous.  The trail they had us walk on wound around a beautiful lake.   At one point, we crossed over a wooden bridge and were greeted by photos of John taken throughout his life (a very nice touch).  My niece and nephew shared a couple of good John Salata stories along the way;  Suzanne and I shared a few good laughs.  The whole journey was incredibly lovely.

Afterwards, John’s family threw one heck of a party.  Prizes were awarded to the top finishers and those who came in closest to John’s 5K race times.  All of the prizes reflected things John loved:  tennis balls, a box of golf balls, camping toilet paper.  Pretty neat, huh?  It was just those kinds of personal touches that made today so special;  the entire day was focused on celebrating John.

Tonight the girls and I feel blessed to have been a tiny part of an extraordinary day.

Your light still shines bright, John Salata, very bright.
