Lessons From the Course//Balance

October 8, 2010

Day two of the United States Disc Golf Championships is in the books.   John hit some great shots and missed some opportunities, as well.  Yesterday the wind played a bigger role than it did on Wednesday, as it swirled or stopped at will,  and messed with more than one player’s shots.  John is sitting at (+3) for the tournament heading into today’s round.

Yesterday I was struck by the huge range of skills a disc golfer must possess in order to succeed on this course.  At Rock Hill, players need to have perfect balance of power and control.  I can’t tell you how many times I watched that red flag (designating an out-of-bounds shot) fly for a shot that landed 4 feet from the basket, yet outside of the ropes.  Players need to throw with strength, but also with absolute precision.  One of the holes here is 1054 feet away from the tee pad.  1054!  That’s a long way, folks.  These guys are out there powering off that tee on their drive.   Want to see what that looks like?

That’s Paul Dorries, from Oklahoma.  Paul was nice enough to let me take a few pictures during yesterday’s round.  Pretty amazing, huh?  But more amazing is the fact that Paul, and all the rest of the players, need to harness all that power, drive it down the course, and then land it between some pretty darn narrow boundaries.  It’s not always the guy (or woman) who has the biggest arm who wins this tournament.  It’s the player who has the best balance between all that power, and control.  Oh, and if that wasn’t enough to convince you that this game is difficult, you can add in a few obstacles just for fun:

That’s was John’s view of the basket for his putt (he didn’t make that one).  Piece of cake, right?   : )

So today John’s heading out for round #3;  same course, same challenges, different day.  John will get another opportunity to find that perfect balance.  He can’t wait to try again, and I can’t wait to watch him play this game he loves.

XO,

Vicki
